#016 Grilled Spicy Tofu on Aspargus and Arugula

So I found a good-looking “spicy tofu” recipe online but when it came time to prepare dinner tonight I could not relocate it. Ugh! After a lot of Googling around I gave up and made up my own recipe. I don’t think I can be modest — my spicy tofu turned out incredibly good!


Spicy Marinade – 2T sesame oil, 2T chili garlic sauce (or similar), 1T rice wine vinegar, 1T maple syrup. Whisk together in shallow baking dish large enough for tofu.
Firm tofu – pressed between paper towels to dry out. Cut into 1 x 1 x 4 inch strips.
Place tofu into marinade. turn every few minutes to marinate the tofu on all four sides.


Just about any combo of vegetables can be used here. I used what I had on-hand.
1 bunch asparagus – cut into 1.5″ pieces; par boiled in salted water for 5 minutes
3 cloves garlic, sliced thinly
1/2 red onion, sliced thinly
1 package arugula
1 cup mushrooms, sliced
1/2 cup cilantro, rough chop
1 T olive oil
1 T soy sauce

Prep the spicy marinade, cut the tofu and get it marinading first. Give it at least 20 minutes total. Longer the better.

Cut up your vegetables and par boil the asparagus for 5 minutes. Drain the asparagus and set aside.

Get the grill hot – I used a stove-top cast iron grill which worked well and was fast and easy. Heat on “hot” but when it starts to smoke, back down to “medium.” Place the marinated tofu on the grill and let it sit for at least 5 minutes. Should turn golden brown with grill marks before turning. If you want to get fancy, turn the tofu 90 degrees when grilling the same side again, to get the cross-hatch marks.


Sauté the garlic and onion next over medium heat. When just translucent add asparagus, arugula and mushrooms. When just starting to wilt, cut the heat to lowest setting and add soy sauce and rice wine vinegar. Toss for a few minutes then add cilantro just before serving.

Serve vegetable mix onto heated plates, place tofu on top, then 1 T of leftover marinade on the tofu strips. You can extend this diet with a carbohydrate, like brown basmati rice.
